Location
This position is required to work in person at various sites across the City. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
The City of Burlington is accepting applications for Assistant Programmers for our Summer Camp and Playground programs. Assistant Programmers are responsible for assisting the Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Programmers in implementing the service plan for summer programs. Assistant Programmers report to the Recreation Programmers and work at various locations throughout Burlington. Assistant Programmers
Camps run from July to the end of August, with occasional training hours in May and June. Hours worked are anywhere from 0-40 hours per week with a maximum of 44. Please note that positions and schedules may vary based on program registrations and regulations around the current health situation.
Current training dates are tentatively planned for May 27, 28 and June 4. Times to be confirmed. Additional training times for Camp staff to follow in June where Assistant Programmers are expected to support in the training events.
Responsibilities
Monitor the overall program plan for all sites. Deliver, review, and monitor programs. Train and provide task supervision to staff, volunteers, and placement students. Work with onsite staff regarding the placement and evaluation of volunteers and Leaders-In-Training. Respond to public, program provider and staff inquiries. Handle situations that have been escalated from the Senior Leader. Resolve participant behavior and conduct issues. Notify supervisor of all accidents or incidents. Contact participant’s emergency contacts if EMS is called. Liaise with program providers and partners to ensure day-to-day needs are addressed. Ensure that all materials and supplies are ordered and organized for the start of programs.
Requirements
You have a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a leader in a camp environment. You can provide an experience of inclusivity to all ages and abilities. Experience mentoring staff or leading a team is considered an asset.
Your confidence and patience are complemented by strong communication, time management, and organization skills. You are creative and demonstrate both active learning and active listening. You have a keen awareness to and understanding of others’ reactions and behaviours.
Some physical exertion is required, which may include lift assistance or behaviour management techniques to participants. You are required to set up program space, which may involve light lifting (e.g., program equipment).
Police Check Requirement
This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.
