Location
This position is required to work in person at various sites across the City. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
The City of Burlington is accepting applications for Senior Leaders for our Summer Camp and Playground programs. Senior Leaders are generally responsible for a specific camp location to oversee the Summer Neighborhood Activity Program (S.N.A.P) or Youth Adventures camps. Summer Senior Leaders also support Park programs such as Park Play and Pop Up and Play. Senior Leaders may support multiple sites and groups acting as Van Driver or through LIT Programs.
Senior Leaders report to the Recreation Programmer or the Recreation Coordinator and work at various locations throughout Burlington. Camps run from July to the end of August, with occasional training hours in May and June. Hours worked are anywhere from 0-40 hours per week with a maximum of 44. Please note that positions and schedules may vary based on program registrations and regulations around the current health situation.
Current training dates are tentatively planned for May 27, 28 and June 4. Times to be confirmed. Additional training times for Camp staff to follow in June where Senior Leaders are expected to support in the training events.
Responsibilities
Senior Leaders are responsible for planning and implementing creative and varied programs to meet the needs and interests of all participants. Successful applicants will be responsible for the safety and supervision of participants both on and offsite and are expected to implement and participate in activities. Senior Leaders will assist with all aspects of camp while providing and coordinating a high-quality program. Senior Leaders will take leadership of the site, helping to mentor and lead staff on-site. The Senior Leader has added responsibilities to oversee the administrative duties of the camp site, often working with multiple groups on site and coordinating the efforts of all staff at that location. As an inclusive program for all abilities, all staff must be prepared to support all participants, including individuals with disabilities. Senior Leaders receive additional training to better support our inclusion participants.
Requirements
You have a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a leader in a camp environment. You can provide an experience of inclusivity to all ages and abilities. Experience supervising staff or providing task direction is considered an asset.
Your confidence and patience are complemented by strong communication, time management, and organization skills. You are creative and demonstrate both active learning and active listening. You have a keen awareness to and understanding of others’ reactions and behaviours.
Some physical exertion is required, which may include lift assistance or behaviour management techniques to participants. You are required to set up program space, which may involve light lifting (e.g., program equipment).
Police Check Requirement
This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.
