Location:

The successful candidate for this position will be required to work in person at various sites across the City and will report to 3330 Harvester Road. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture or Supervisor of Parks, Gardener/Landscapers are responsible for preparing and maintaining horticultural displays on roadways, in parks as well as general parks maintenance throughout the City of Burlington.

The Gardener/Landscaper will provide a variety of services, such as:

• Lead and train crew members on the safe operation of equipment, tools and safe work procedures maintaining various horticultural displays
• Prepare, install, maintain and remove plantings; including watering, amendments, fertilizing, weeding and pruning
• Operating handheld equipment and hand tools related to grass cutting, sportsfield maintenance and general park maintenance activities.
• Perform minor adjustments, day-to-day and routine maintenance on equipment and tools used for horticultural and park maintenance tasks.
• Picking litter and emptying garbage receptacles from parks, playgrounds, parking lots, and roadsides etc.
• Opening, closing, inspecting, cleaning and disinfecting public washroom facilities
• Participating in loose leaf and winter control operations.
• Completing administrative tasks in an accurate and timely manner; including daily activity sheets, training documentation and other required paperwork.
• Complying with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures.
• Performing other duties as assigned

Requirements:

The successful candidate should possess good judgment, problem solving and customer service skills. They will have experience related to the above-noted duties normally acquired through the completion of a 2-year post-secondary certificate or diploma in Horticulture, or a closely related field of study along with 1 – 2 years of relevant gardening/ landscaping experience. Candidates with the equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Applicants must possess a Class-G drivers’ License and/or be willing to obtain a Class D-Z license and must have a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour (an acceptable driver’s abstract - no more than three (3) driving related convictions and an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).

Candidates will be required to demonstrate their qualifications by passing a written, oral and/or practical examination, as part of the recruitment process. Shift work will be required depending on time of year.  

This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
